When John Deere unveiled the first crocodiles in the early 90, the company may not have known that it was introducing a new category of machines: UTVs. Now that the market is flooded with UTVs of several brands and categories, where does the last Gator utility fit in, the 825i? We found out during the 2017 successful agriculture last UTV assessment.
This year, the successful farming magazine conducted its third extensive assessment of UTV to provide you with information on how UTVs to perform in AG applications. During the evaluation, we put seven of the newer utility vehicles with four rigorous tests.
John Deere has recently unleashed its most performance-driven Gator utility vehicles. Directed towards the true outdoor adventurer, the 2011 alignment of crossover utility vehicles (XUV) is packed with advanced features that offer an unprecedented balance between work and recreation.
The 2011 Gator XUV 825i is the quickest gator at any point created. With 50 HP, it is the most intense motor in its class with a best combine of low-end to expect even the hardest errands, the trails and the landscape. The torque is conveyed by a 815cc, fluid cooled, 3-barrel inline motor with 4 valves for every chamber, double head cams and electronic fuel infusion.
All new Gator XUV models have a completely redesigned front and rear independent suspension system that offers a superior ride through rough terrain. New models are designed for less body roll and top side hill stability with no-load or maximum load. In addition, all Sport models have a completely new braking system that improves the performance of the detention on the previous models.
The Gator XUV also features 1500 lbs of tow and 1400 lbs of load capacity. The new hybrid metal and Composite cargo box offers 16.4 cubic feet of capacity, most in its class, and an available factory installed spray-in bed liner with 20 integrated draws to help keep the load in place. The sides of this cargo box are also removable, giving the user a flat bed that is easy to load and unload from either side.

The Gator is powered by a 812-CC, automotive-style, three-cylinder engine that produces around 50 hp. This engine will feed the Gator up to 44 MPH speeds, but it is where the engine makes its power that is important.
This is a low-end engine, that is, power actually turns on at the lower end of the RPMS. This was very evident during the evaluation when we tried the Gator with a full load on the load bed (1,000 lbs) and with a 1,500 lb trailer. The Gator scored an impressive 20.6 points of 25 for the test with charge box load to the maximum, enough for the third place in this test (see complete results below).
The suspension configuration likewise played a gigantic move on how the Gator was performed amid the test. The reaction of the address was high in the assessments for two stacked tests and with the trailer. Truth be told, the Gator scored as high as 4.7 out of five focuses amid the trailer test, demonstrating that the body was not adversely influenced by the substantial load.
The suspension also worked well during simulated work tests. There is a fully independent arm on each corner, with eight inches of travel on the front shocks and nine inches on the back cushions. While the suspension is a bit stiff on the road, it works well with a load on the bed.

If you look at the Gator next to other brands, it’s obviously all John Deere. Deere does things his way, and that contributes to the sensation and ergonomics of the machine. The location and angle of the steering wheel feels very different from other offers as it fits your hand more like a small tractor than a UTV. The change controls and the differential lock are under the seat, instead of on the board, that users can or do not prefer.
The Gator 825i is built to operate. Yes, you can crawl with him and he’ll do it all day, but there are better machines for that. If you’re going to work hard, the Gator is up to the task. You’ll have 1,000 pounds in bed, and while the bed can squeak a little, you’ll just notice the load back there. The floor of the load bed is metal, so things can change some, especially in a slant.
The Gator will tow a 1,500-pound trailer with relative ease and have a two-inch receiver as standard equipment. If you go on uneven terrain, you will begin to notice the weight as it will affect the manipulation. However, the work will still be done. The engine has the low-end grunt to tow and drag all day. Returning to how well the machine scored in the fully loaded tests, it was made to work hard and it does very well in these areas.
